She Hates Exercise.
Recently, I had the privilege of working with someone new to the studio. It was about the 10th time Suzanne had been in for a session and she still hated exercise. I mean hates it.
I like to follow up the first couple of sessions with anyone new and ask how they are doing and how they feel. Rather than telling me that it was a good session or that she enjoyed it, her response was ‘I didn’t hate it’.
Okay, I think that was good, but it was hard to tell.
It’s a challenge to teach someone who has such strong feelings against exercise; yet, I have compassion for her very existence in the studio. She is here because she desires to make changes and she is not about to hide her feelings.
Whether I agree or not, it is commendable. It’s not about me, never is.
It is always about the person, the body and the mind standing in front of me.
So why did I believe that I can change her? Why did I need to change her idea of exercise?
The answer was I didn’t. My opinion didn’t belong.
For her, she was here and that’s a mighty big happening.
I realized that what I was trying to do with Suzanne was share my idea of how she may want to approach the exercise that she hated. It was session number 10 and maybe this was going to be the turn around one.
But, she has always hated it, so there was no good reason that at 53 years old things would change.
One of the things that I love about what I do is the partnering with such variety of people. We get to use the studio as a medium to sort out an exercise plan for the lifestyle they have.
For some their studio visits once or twice a week is it for them regarding exercise. Others desire a routine that they can do at home in between our sessions together. I’m not sure we have anyone else in here who hates exercise like Suzanne.
Regardless, at the end of the day, the underlying reason that these boomer women come to the studio is to move.
Period.
Life is movement and nothing can be truer than ‘move it or lose it’.
Resisting Exercise?
How do you show up for your fitness?
Is it something that you resist doing or even starting?
What are some of the excuses reasons that you have when you miss?
The biggest reason I have heard from our community of women is they have a tough time fitting it in.
Sure, they’ll tell you about the big plans to go to the gym, Zumba class, or hot yoga, but more than likely it boils down to actually doing what you talk about.
Even if you don’t have that hour to fit it in, remember movement/exercise/fitness can be as simple as lacing up for a walk in your neighborhood.
Chances are once you decide, lace up, and step outside you’ll be glad you did.
The one awesome thing about walking is that it is free! Can’t beat free.
Even though Suzanne hated exercise she knows what she needs to do. That is why she scheduled her sessions out for the next 3 months here in the studio. Between her busy medical practice,2 children and family she finds a way to fit it in.
Even if it means telling me how much she hates it, I’m glad that she can share that with me.
These days I just smile and move her along.
Here is a short video that I shared with Suzanne.
It uses many muscle groups to get the best bang for your time.
Use a 5 or 8 lb. weight. It takes only 3 minutes and you can do it anywhere.
Get real crazy and repeat it twice
