Running Into Trouble
Why do you want to ditch walking to run?
Are you looking to:
=>Get the ‘runner’s high’
=>To shed pounds
=>Burn calories
=>Compete
=>Challenge yourself
=>Surprise your kids/grandkids
Okay, wanna run?
Consider some facts first.
The chance of injury is greater than many other aerobic exercises.
Your lower joints are loaded with 4 times the weight of your body.
This means that is you have a pre-existing injury or damage you’re headed for trouble somewhere down the line.
Sometimes, you’re clueless that you even have any vulnerabilities until you start pounding the pavement.
Some bodies simply are not meant to be pounded and traumatized the way running injects.
Joints in the ankles, knees, and hips can seriously suffer.
Running can even be hard on the kidneys.
For one reason or another some folks just ignore the messages their bodies tell.
Those nice, soft text messages turn into an e-mail that is marked with the high priority ( !! ).
New runners like to push through that pain in the heel, or swelling in the ankle, clicking in the knee.
Oh those shin splints, they’re a real doosy!
Aging, booming and overweight? You’ll increase the risk of foot, ankle, knee and hip complaints quickly.
You’ll be Googling bursitis, tendontitis, inflammation, strains, sprains, shin splints, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, and and runner’s knee.
I say this because I know.
I love(d) running.
My body never felt so good than when I ran. Always outside, never on a dreadmill.
There came a time recently that I had to re-evaluate my passion.
My body wasn’t the same body that competed in the 5 K, 10 K, half marathon, and triathlon over a 5 year period. This body today is different.
My ideas of health and fitness have changed through the years.
What matters today is that I am strong, able to move functionally to do everything I want and to be pain free.
Competing in my age category to win that silly medal that a 9 year old would appreciate makes no sense anymore.
If you give it a go at running and it doesn’t work out, remember…
Not everybody is Born To Run.
Walking works wonders for your waistline, your wellness, and your way of life.
Unplug, disconnect, open the door and get out for a refreshing walk-
your body is sure to love it!
