I Hate Exercise!

wall of effortSelf motivation is tough. You haven’t found that one thing that gets you excited.Your workout buddy isn’t dependable. Your music is so-so.  Those DVD’s are so repetitive. You get bored easily.

Some of your friends tell you:

just find a reason to do it  or…

find something you love or…

push yourself to go to the gym

Ain’t working.

With that list no wonder there is no joy in exercising.

Forget about joy and just get me through it you say.It doesn’t matter how many articles you read that tell you the same thing spun 10 different ways, you’re still not convinced that you can like exercise. How can you? It takes up too much time in your day You dislike sweating. Your mind gets bored.  Your hemorrhoids will act up. Exertion feels like too much work. You’d so much rather be doing something else.

Somebody distract me!

So, you pet the cat.

When you force fitness it seems logical that your rate of compliance will eventually falter. You actually become defiant because you have tried to swallow the rule of exercise whole rather than digest it. Your mind gets busy filled with ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’. You feel pushed around by this rigid dictum that demands you get active because everyone says it’s good for you.

Rather than once again repeating the same thing that doesn’t get you anywhere, step aside and ask yourself…

Why Do I Hate Exercise?

What is it that you resist so much?

That resistance will bury you if you allow it. It has no discretion. It will bury you in anything that you do not just exercise. This resistance is like an energy field hovering over you and between what you know you ‘should’ do. You use your ‘pass’ card simply because you can. And again. And again. Pass on exercise, physical activity, and anything that sounds like moving.

This self-destructive behavior doesn’t serve you. You can get away with it, because you have up to this point.

And that’s where we begin. This point. Now.

Why do you hate exercise?

Ask yourself that question nine times. Really. Each time write down your new answer answer. Imagine that you are hearing that question for for the first time for those nine times to keep it fresh.

Now go through your answers and pick three that seem modifiable.

Out of those 3 choose one.

That one is where you begin today.

You begin to self regulate with this ONE.

Can you endorse a personal change with a relaxed commitment with this one?

All of your excuses serve a purpose believe it or not. Somehow they provide comfort even in a false sense of security. They help bind your disdain and anxiety by giving you permission to escape. Temporary distractions.

Are you willing to allow those uncomfortable feelings to come up that the bad behaviors are blocking? That’s the real inquiry.  It’s not, why do I hate exercise? The gap that you’ve created by avoiding exercise has now become a gulf. Feeling overwhelmed another day goes by that you excuse yourself.

Ease into exercise by going back to that one answer from above.

Beating yourself up over the head with a 300 lb. broom isn’t taking you anywhere, but neither is your stagnation.

Begin with that one answer.  Explore that answer inside and out. Explore it while you go for a walk.  I have found it very powerful by watching folks in the studio explore all kinds of inquiries while they are moving.  It can be very therapeutic and you can emerge with a real fresh perspective.

Forcing fitness can feel so constricting. Taking charge of your health and accepting a personal commitment to change by taking a genuine interest in your own well being will bring you closer to success.

Remember, rather than trying to eat the whole exercise excuse pie, begin by digesting that one piece out of the nine slices.
