How To Move Forward after July 4th
Here’s an idea to wrap your head around.
This Friday, July 1st at around high noon is exactly half way through the year. It’ll be day 182.5.
Don’t get lost, and don’t get sucked back into January 1, but look back for a brief moment.
What did you set out to do for the sake of the New Year’s Resolutions that everyone else was doing?
Did you fall into a trap of setting unrealistic things that you hoped to have accomplished by now? Or, by no means were they unrealistic, you just didn’t do them.
Okay, got your answer? Stop looking back, that task is done.
How do you feel about what you thought you’d accomplish?
Is it still something that you truly desire to do, become, get rid or master?
If you’re not feeling the love for that former goal from January 1st, drop it.
Get a new one.
If you don’t really want to drop, how can you reframe it for the second half of 2011?
There’s no sense in beating yourself up over the head of what you didn’t do. We all do it. For the sake of what? It seems we get in this daily game of thinking we are going to “get back on track.” We’re sitting there with our ticket in hand, waiting. Over time we get worn. But we still hold out that hope. Soon, we’ll get there. Tomorrow.
Get off that track. It’s not getting you there. There are plenty of trains leaving the station. The lovely piece is that you get to choose your time of departure. Then you get to choose your seat. Yahoo!
From there you can settle on in or get up and move about. You won’t be on that train forever, so don’t unpack your big bags. Just use that small one for this ride till the next destination.
Chances are that what you want is pretty darn important to you if you wanted to be part of the “universal resolutions team” at the beginning of the year. Heck, you don’t join that team because it’s an easy membership. It’s hard. It’s work. It’s possibly large and challenging.
But, you CAN DO IT.
Start now.
Actually, begin on Friday, July 1st at high noon. Take the time between the present that is staring at you and Friday to check in with yourself.
- Where are you headed?
- How do you want to move forward?
Our resolutions are never to go back to the past, so stop beating yourself up over the last 6 months of your apparent ‘failure’. You didn’t fail. You wouldn’t be reading this if you believed you did. You know better.
Re-visit and reframe that one goal that you really, really want to do. You’re going to feel so darn good when you do it.
But remember: a journey of 1,000 miles begins with single step (Lao Tzu).
Step into the second half of the year with a renewed sense of optimism. Wipe the fog away. Straight through that fog is where you’ll be when you get there.
You’ll get there. Just get rid of the old stories.
Think of yourself as a pawn.
Even though the pawn is the weakest piece, it can only move forward.
Pawns Alive!
