Get a Head Start

It’s easy to get blinded by the Christmas lights, cooking frenzy, cash registers, and holiday parties. You see it coming, don’t you?  Before you know it, you’ll be assessing the New Year and what you are going to resolve. Undoubtedly, there’s a large chance that you’ll be among the 2 million people embarking on the ritual. Resolutions that have to do with health, diet, fitness and weight loss top the list.

December is usually a month that overindulges our everything…eating, drinking, and shopping. We slack off on exercise and move less because our time is compromised with all the eating, drinking, and shopping. You’ll pick it back up come the New Year. Or even better, you’ll enter the stratosphere of resolvers, plan big to lose 15 lbs. by March and have a large possibility of falling from grace by February 2.

Okay, let’s get a new date on the calendar and get a head start. How about now, today even, December 15th? Realistically, you will get a 17 day head start on your plans. Imagine that!

May I share with you 2 important things to consider, remember and execute?

First, stop giving yourself permission to be a pig. Sorry, but you know what I mean. We groan from a holiday bloating meal, yet, excuse ourselves by rationalizing our future promise once we wake up after our New Year’s celebration. Stop it already. If you want, you can.

Rather than giving yourself permission to eat 12 chocolate chip cookies every other day in the month of December, decide to indulge less. Your typical seasonal behavior is a matter of changing your choice… today.

Secondly, free yourself from the constraints of how you think you need to exercise. Recognize that going to the gym, meeting with your trainer, or scheduling your Zumba class is going to be out of sorts this month. Again, great opportunity to change your choice.

Choose to be free – go for a walk. It’s free in 2 ways.  The cost and the opportunity is any time.

Think walking is for sissies?  Walking is one of the simplest ways to exercise, burn calories, and invigorate your lungs and cardiovascular system. You know the pump that generates our life force.

Trapped in an office all day? Clustered in a mall with dozens of frenzied shoppers running you over to get their grandchild that LEGO Harry Potter set? Slaving over the stove preparing for all your company? Stop it, go for a walk. We’re talking at least a 20 minute walk, even if you are a newbie. It’s free remember.  How’s that for unconstrained? It has no schedule to meet, except yours.

Walking is one of the simplest ways to get fit, stay in shape and stay feeling better during the holidays, when everyone else is excusing themselves .

Begin today by excusing yourself to go lace up and get out.

Start now.  Get a head start on feeling energetic and alive during the holiday season.  It will not only physically feel good; walking will elevate your mind, your mood and your immunity. How’s that for a holiday boost?
